Innovative Medicines:
The Innovative Medicines Division has two business units:
Novartis Pharmaceuticals focuses on patented treatments in the areas of ophthalmology; immunology, hepatology and dermatology; neuroscience; respiratory; and cardio-metabolic.
Novartis Oncology focuses on patented treatments for a variety of cancers and rare diseases.
Sandoz offers patients and healthcare professionals high-quality, affordable generics and biosimilars.
Functional organizations with a global reach:
Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis. NIBR focuses on discovering new drugs that can change the practice of medicine.
Global Drug Development (GDD) organization oversees the development of new medicines discovered by our researchers and partners.
Novartis Technical Operations (NTO) handles manufacturing of innovative medicines and Sandoz products.
NTO helps us optimize resource allocation and capacity planning across our production sites.
Novartis Business Services (NBS) consolidates support services across our organization, helping drive efficiency, simplification, standardization and quality.
Corporate Functions support the enterprise in specific areas of expertise, including finance, human resources, legal and communications.
As a Preformulation Scientist, it is your opportunity to take part in pioneering with us in a role of a technical leader from molecule allocation until market approval. Take the lead as a central piece of drug product development in the very first step of development, setting the foundations for success.
Your key responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead, design, plan, execute, and review scientific experiments and documentation as well as statistical analysis and interpretation of the results to de-formulate and pre-formulate solid and liquid dosage forms applying QbD principles with special focus on rigorous DoE in both small and large scale settings
- Actively support product development with scientific input and generate scientific documents to hand over to internal and/or external partners and support generation of international registration documents
- Report, interpret, and present scientific/technical results to management
- Support establishing and improving internal procedures
- Participate in technical sub-teams and fulfill assigned project tasks and responsibilities
- Actively participate in knowledge exchange; train, mentor and coach a team of scientists and technicians, temporary employees, and employees under training/education

Minimum requirements
Essential:
- Fluency in English.
- PharmD, MSc or Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science or close pharmaceutical-related field;
- Strong background in solid and liquid drug product characterization and deformulation, particularly in oral solid dosage forms and injectables;
- Understanding of the product life cycle, with special emphasis in development
- Understanding of QbD and ICH guidelines, Pharmacopeia monographs, and pharmaceutical patents;
- Ability to quickly adapt to different project requirements, proactively and autonomously finding technical solutions, and exploring new approaches.
- Sharp scientific skills allowing the drawing of accurate assumptions from limited data to assess the next step in a development program, strong communication and presentation skills and persuasive personality with a positive mindset, team-minded and a strong can-do attitude;
- General understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
Desirable requirements:
- GMP and GDP knowledge.
- Know-how in de-formulation methodologies.

In addition to a market-competitive base salary, we offer an attractive incentive program, a modern company pension scheme, childcare facilities, learning and development options as well as worldwide career opportunities within the Novartis group. In accordance with Austrian law, we are obliged to disclose the minimum salary as stated in the collective bargaining agreement. For this position, the minimum salary is €54,788.30 /year (on a full time basis). We also offer a potential market-oriented excess payment in line with your experience and qualifications.
